Daljit Dhaliwal

Daljit Dhaliwal is a journalist who currently hosts the PBS series Wide Angle and Foreign Exchange. She once anchored ITN's now-cancelled World News for Public Television from London, seen on various PBS affiliates in the US. After that she co-anchored Your World Today on CNN International from Atlanta and hosted the weekend edition of World Report. She has also done occasional presentations for the Channel Four News in the UK, has guest-hosted on NPR's On The Media, and had reported from New York for BBC World News.

She was born in London, her parents having emigrated from India, and is the oldest of four siblings. She has a degree in philosophy and history from Polytechnic of East London (now the University of East London) and a masters in politics, history, and economics from the University of London. Starting as a reporter at the BBC in 1990, covering Northern Ireland, she went on to work at ITN in 1995.

Her birthday is somewhere between early August and October, 1962 (if anyone knows and can confirm the exact date, please email me -- we need to know when to celebrate!) She is 5'2" tall, is married to American journalist Lee Patrick Sullivan, and is currently based in New York.

• 2008-03-29 Sorry for being a bit late with this, but since January Daljit has had a new gig as the host of Foreign Exchange:

• 2007-08-31 Back in July, Daljit did an interview with the Gothamist. Topics include Wide Angle, American exposure to international news, the bluring lines between celebrity and serious news, field work vs. studio work, and, since this is the Gothamist, her views on New York. Also, two very lovely photos.
• 2007-06-12 The Celebration of Teaching & Learning site now has a brief video from Daljit's panel discussion: "Daljit Dhaliwal and the PEARL reporters discuss journalism as a passion, and why the environment is an important subject for young journalists."
• 2007-05-28 Here's something I missed: a transcript of a live chat with Daljit from back in January as a lead in to the Celebration of Teaching and Learning Conference, in which she answered many questions about journalism (and we learn she speaks non-fluent Punjabi without an accent and enough Spanish to go to Spain and order wine).

  Also, be sure to tune in for the season premiere of Wide Angle on Tuesday, July 3 at 9pm. The film, titled The People's Court, is about the legal system in China. Daljit's end interview will be with a "foreign policy expert to examine the global implications of China's legal reforms and connect the dots for American viewers".

• 2007-01-31 On Friday, Feb. 2, Daljit will be moderating a panel discussion called Translating the World: Engaging Americans in International Journalism at New York University.
• 2006-11-08 Little late, but... On Oct, 28, Daljit emceed the American India Foundation's fifth anniversary gala fundraiser held in Anaheim, California, where she "kept the program moving well with her crisp introductions and witty remarks."
• 2006-09-15 According to the New York Times, Daljit will be conducting "Academy Awards-style interviews" of celebrities -- including Sean Connery, David Bowie, and Al Roker -- at a public gala for the opening-night performance of "Madama Butterfly" at the Metropolitan Opera on Sept. 25. The interviews will be simulcast on the Panasonic jumbo screen in Times Square and screens at Lincoln Center Plaza.
• 2006-08-25 W.L. writes: "Daljit is once again guest-hosting the Brian Lehrer Show today (Friday, Aug. 25) on WNYC (AM 820, FM 93.9 and on line at wnyc.org), from 10 a.m. to noon! Yay! Sounds like she has a cold, though, as her voice is very scratchy and deep."
• 2006-08-09 Daljit has been anchoring the US version of BBC World News (6:00 PM BBC America and on PBS affiliates) since last week (I think, haven't caught it every night). I don't know if this will be a regular gig or if she's just subbing for someone.
